She is not my baby.

I didn't have any photo shoot experience with baby.
Today, I had to spend most of my time and effort to make her happy rather than adjust lighting or other photographic stuff.
But I reallise none of all photographic skills needed when I shoot absolutely cute baby.

Perfect dream (Listening to Dance BGM)

Hi, guys.
It's been such a long time since I disappeared on the blog.
I've been doing some next works for a while. I think I can show them in few months.
Anyway, here is one of my new work. Actually, it's a music.

I collaborated with songwriter NORA based in Korea.
I explained about 'Listening to Dance' project and asked to making a song with his emotions he felt from a photo. I wanted to see how this visualised music emotion photo really works.

If you can make a purchase this song, could you tell me how you feel the difference between this song and old one, which is Agnes Obel's 'Riverside'?

My song isn't really expensive, right?

To buy it:

New Project : 'Say to me #2'

600 hundred years ago, the king of Korea made Korean alphabet. (Han-gul)
It was designed based on shapes of tongue, lips and jaw because the king wanted to people learn it very easily.
This is a photo which is visualised english alphabet with coloured water based on Korean alphabet logic.
She was saying 'P' and her lips and tongue made that shape of water.

This project still in progress.

Listening to dance

Dance is a visual language which is intimately entwined with emotions. The movement and shape of fingers, arms, legs and even toes can be used to express a variety of emotions.
In this project, I have attempted to illustrate music through the movements and expressions of dance. My images visualize both the effect that music has and what it means to me.
By capturing and combining particular movements photographically, I want to communicate the changing emotions and feelings of a particular piece of music so that these can be experience by people feel music without the sound.

I played a Danish songwriter Agnes Obel’s  ‘Riverside’ to the dancers. It has a classical and dreamlike quality. When I heard this music, it made me calm and evoked some idle fancies that gave me a very small but powerful energy.
I wanted to express these complex emotions through a very soft, warm  orange colour and small, powerful, slow, sad and bright movements.
I didn’t impose any limitations on the dancers - I wanted them to dance spontaneously to the music, which they heard it for first time at our studio  sessions.

I have grouped each set of images according to the movements within the music’s structure and intervals. Each 3 minute and 49 second sections of music is now combined into single images which have been composited together. I dedicate this project to my friend who cannot hear the music.

Musical Diplomacy

The people of North Korea, have experienced many changes under communism and the control and oppression of dictator Kim jung il. They have begun to start their own businesses, watch a foreign TV, to listen to foreign pop song and to play this music with their own instruments. A spanish song called ‘La paloma’ has become very popular even though it is an illegal to listen to or play. These actions are an open secret, and represent a new era of liberalism. In response to a ‘Conflict’ brief, I tried to address one of the North-South problems of Korea, by focusing on this new vogue for playing western style music on the guitar.

Guitar lessons are given secretly , so I designed  my own guitar sheet music for “La Paloma’ to help them learn easily and quickly  using a particular colour scheme which is also a secret code . Moreover, I made this musical notation as a stamp, so that this music could be produced in large quantities,  but could also be hidden  behind a portrait of Kim jung il.

By law the People of North Korea must have a portrait of him in their home, so it is an untouchable article, even for the police, so this provides a perfect place to hide it.

I designed my music sheets to be made with edible paper and food colouring so that they can be eaten in case of an emergency which will leave no trace. If anyone is suspected by the police of having music sheet, there will be no clear evidence.. It is also a small gesture towards the problems of food shortage and hunger in North Korea.

Listen to music

For a long time, I really wanted to show and make feel the music
for my friend who cannot hear at all.
She has been my first but one-sided love since I was kid.
I dedicate this photo for her.
(Actually, this is not really what I want to show you. I have more.)
Anyway...
Can you hear it?

Multi exposure on Medium format film
Music : Agnes Obel 'Riverside'

Can you hear it?

Can you feel that music?
It is really sweet song.

Memory paradox

Can you guarantee your memories are right?
Can you describe how your friend's face look like exactly?
Our memories are always distorted, staged and overlaid.

35mm film. ISO 200
No photoshop at all. :)
